Complex urban crises demand multi-scale, multi-faceted, cross-sector approaches well beyond traditional humanitarian and development boundaries. The Urban Expert Group working towards the Recommendations developed for the World Humanitarian Summit that took place in Istanbul, in May 2016 has formed a Global Alliance for Urban Crises.

Center for Urban Disaster Risk Reduction and Resilience (CUDRR+R), previously a member of the Urban Expert Group, has joined the Global Alliance for Urban Crises, dedicated to adapting humanitarian action to an urban world.

Key Messages:

With over half of the world’s population living in urban areas, urbanization is defining our global reality. The intersection of urbanization with conflict, displacement and climate change calls into question traditional ways humanitarians respond to crises. The humanitarian landscape is changing and our response needs to change with it. Cities and human settlements provide the template for sustainability and peace. The Global Alliance for Urban Crises provides a unique opportunity to face the challenges of addressing humanitarian crises in an urban context. The Global Alliance for Urban Crises goes beyond basic infrastructure and shelter provision to put people at the centre of humanitarian response.
